A STUDENT Journalist at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), George Obeng, has joined the race for the Manhean Electoral Area assembly poll.

Manhean electoral area is in the Ga West Municipal Assembly (GWMA), and it is one area where the assembly member position is keenly contested.

Six aspirants are contesting this year in the assembly election in the Manhean electoral area. They are the incumbent Assembly member, Nathaniel Tetteh Lomotey (aka Nii Bi Nii), a former Assembly member, Malik Abass, Daniel Aryee Aryeetey, George Obeng, Thomas Tetteh and one Seth.

With the exception of George Obeng, the remaining five assembly member hopefuls have all contested in past assembly polls in the area.

In fact, Malik Abass was the Assembly member for Manhean Electoral Area from the period (2015-2019), while Daniel Aryee Aryeetey and Thomas Tetteh both contested in the last assembly member election (2019).

What makes this year’s assembly poll in the Manhean electoral area interesting is the entry of George Obeng, who is popularly known as Okordie, among residents in Manhean and its environs.

Already George’s candidacy is attracting loads of sympathisers and supporters who are goading him on to go all out and win the poll.

In addition, his declaration has sent shivers down the spine of especially the incumbent Assemblyman, owing to the former’s mass popularity in Manhean electoral area.

Meanwhile snippets of information available to MyPagegh.com indicates that some of the aspirants are making moves to try and persuade Mr Obeng to reconsider his decision.

A trusted source close to the current assembly man told this online portal that moves were underway to woo Okordie to their camp, possibly to convince him to contest as a Unit Committee member instead of the assembly member position.

But in an interview with George, he underscored that his goal is to win the ultimate—the assembly member position—and prosecute his vision of bringing ‘real development’ to the communities that fall under the Manhean electoral area.

“I am not in to enrich myself but to do my bit to improve the wellbeing of the people of Manhean Electoral Area, particularly the youth. Once I am given the mandate, I will serve my people instead of them serving me!” he stressed.

He, however, bemoaned the many teens in the electoral area who are into commercial motor business, popularly known as Okada.

“The fact of the matter is that the Okada business comes with great risk and these little ones are no exception,” he warned.

“For the youth, I will lay more emphasis on the importance of education and the need for them to take education serious, and not quit just after graduating from JHS,” he said.

George Obeng assured that he will collaborate with the Manhean Council of Elders to ensure that residents in the area and other environs have access to potable water.

“My other goals will be to help bring a police post and a refuse container to Manhean,” he assured.

According to him, the refuse container will be placed at convenient spots in communities under the Manhean electoral area to prevent indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

“Under my tenure, I will be organising regular cleanup exercises, all as part of my effort to ensure a clean Manhean electoral area,” he promised.

As a journalist, George Obeng has worked in media houses including Today newspaper, DAILY Analyst newspaper, contributed stories for MyPagegh.com, an online news portal and currently the Morning and Evening Show Host of a community radio station in Manhean (Radio SOV).

He is currently the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Maristar Scout, Greater Accra. George Obeng is also the Vice President of All MCs Network, Ga West Municipality an also the current PTA Chairman of Soul Royale Academy, a private school in Afuaman.

As PRO of Maristar Scout, George has used his influence to allow some of the scout members to travel to countries including Japan and Dubai.

He is a devout Christian and an Elder of The Divine Healers Church, Manhean and active member of the Men’s Fellowship, The Divine Healers Church, Manhean.

George also holds an enviable position in GOG Trusted Properties, a private real estate company, as Chief Marketing Executive.
