The Municipal Chief Executive of the Kwabre East Municipal has said that if 'programmatic measures are not put in place to uplift agriculture' which is less attractive to the Ghanaian youth today, it would lose it immense role towards the Ghanaians economy.

Hon Osei Assibey Bonsu promised that the Akufo Addo’s government would continue to create the needed platform to provide improved extended services to farmers in order to achieve his administrative goals to help transform Ghana.

“It is even interesting to know that farming in most public sector is considered the last resolve in terms of waiting at the possible avenues to supplement their income. The early this perception is changed, the better, it will be for all of us as Ghanaians,” he said.

The Kwabre East Municipal on Friday, November 6, 2020, held its 36th National Farmers’ Day celebration at Baamang and in attendance was the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Hon. Francisca Oteng Mensah who helped to reward agriculturalist for their contribution towards the Ghanaians welfare and the economy especially in the coronavirus pandemic hence the theme, “Ensuring Agribusiness Development under COVID-19 opportunities and challenges.”

Considering the farmers who received the awards, majority of them fall within the matured age in the absence of young-looking people in the sector.

This is by reason of the youth interest in seeking ‘white-collar jobs’ after school with no admiration for the farming business, a trade they see us not inspired and belonging to the aged.

The MCE addressed that if that perception is not dissolved, the trade would suffer in the future which could affect the country’s financial system.

“These groups who constitute the active group of the population are increasing drifting for the rural to the urban areas in search of non-existing white-collar jobs thereby leaving Agriculture to the weak and the old people.

“This phenomenon must be reversed to enable the young appreciate the dignity and glamour associated with farming.”

He added that the Kwabre East Municipal will continue to work with private sectors to make farming lucrative in order to appeal improved to welcome the youth.

“I, therefore, invite the private sector to continue to work closely with the assembly to make sure that the potential of the Agric centre is fully maximized with the benefit of the people while urging the private sector to support, it is a call to the youth to accept farming as a responsible activity that is not only rewarding but of immense benefit to the country.
