Filmmakers need to be strategic – George Bosompim

In order to avoid being found lacking, he urged filmmakers to educate themselves about all the rules that govern the industry rather than simply waking up and starting to shoot movies.

The call was made by Mr. Bosompim while he was a panelist at the Graphic Showbiz Forum, which was held on Tuesday, July 25 at the Multichoice Ghana offices and covered the topic Future of the Ghana Movie Industry: Bright or Bleak.

The film industry is a tremendously large field that calls for many different tactical strategies. For instance, before beginning work on a film, a director must meet with a marketer to discuss the script and learn more about their intended audience.

"You don't finish filming a movie and then set out to get sponsors to support its distribution. Before you begin filming, the marketers will be able to tell you whether or not the movie will be successful and which target demographic will buy it.

George Bosompim continued by advising filmmakers to research extensively about specific rules, such as how to compete for international honors like the Oscars.

"When you don't know what happens at the Oscars, you can't just submit your movies there and hope they get nominated. For instance, I am aware that in order to qualify for the Oscars, your film must be screened and approved by the general public in your home nation.

"The movie must be shot with a high-standard camera and you can utilize more than 50% local language. These are some fundamental concepts that every filmmakers should understand, but sadly, the most of them do not read to do so.

"Getting our movies out to wherever we want will be easier if we are aware of all these rules and put them into practice. A DSTV or Some films are rejected by Akwaaba Magic because they do not meet the company's standards for quality or the level is too low.

But once we are aware of the requirements, we will use top-notch actors and advanced cameras to have our films approved. Only a few Ghanaian film makers currently have their films on Akwaaba Magic, which is unacceptable, he continued.
