Jota heads home Liverpool's winner

Diogo Jota’s header was all Liverpool needed for the three points after a hard-fought win at Anfield.

Alisson was featured after missing three games through injury to replace Adrian in goal for his first appearance since the win over Gunners. Diogo Jota made his first league start at Anfield since joining the club as Fabinho and Gomez partnered at the heart of defence.

Rhian Brewster was a Liverpool player up until a few weeks ago and made his first Sheffield United start against his former club, as one of three changes from their draw with Fulham.

The other two incomings are Ben Osborn and Ethan Ampadu, with Oliver Norwood back on the bench and Max Lowe out of the squad.

Sheffield were awarded a penalty after Fabinho slid on McBurnie right on the line of the Liverpool box. Initially, referee Andre Marriner pointed for a freekick but after VAR’s review, he awarded the controversial decision. Berge put the ball on Alisson’s left with the Brazilian diving the other way.

The Reds were shut down by the Blades defence as they controlled the ball around without being able to create any opportunity.

Sheffield almost doubled the scores in the 21-minute. Ampadu delivered a stunning ball into the area from barely inside the home side’s half. It took a wicked bend and found McBurnie in the box on the far side. He skewed his shot past the far post by some distance.

It was all Sheffield threatening the champions in their own half, and it was Lundstram’s delivery that was punched by Alisson to the edge of the area, yet the visitors could not capitalize before the ball was cleared.

Firmino put the Reds level five minutes to half time.

Trent Arnold at the right side in the Sheffield area handed over the ball to Henderson for a cross. The captain’s exquisite ball from deep was headed at Ramsdale by Mane, but the goalkeeper could do nothing about Firmino on the rebound as he tapped home into an empty net.

The Reds stepped up the gear in the second half and saw Salah’s 62-minute ruled by VAR as offside, but nevertheless, Diogo Jota in two minutes’ time headed home the winner and his 18th goal in the Premier League, his second for Liverpool.

Mane was given a little bit too much room by Baldock to cross in on his left from the flank.

Jota peeled off Stevens - who himself wasn’t the tallest - to nod beyond a stranded Ramsdale at the far post for his second Premier League goal for his new side.

Sheffield kept asking questions but the coordination of Joe Gomez and Fabinho kept the defence padlocked to collect all the points.
