DR Congo gold mine attack kills dozens

Armed men invaded a gold mine in Djugu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo's eastern Ituri province, on Sunday, killing dozens of people.

A local official told the AFP news agency that 29 remains had been recovered from the artisanal mine.

According to the report, a four-month-old baby was among the dead.

The ministry of communication blamed the attack on the Codeco rebel organization in a statement.

"The government expresses its determination to restore peace in the face of the umpteenth brutal and cowardly act of Codeco terrorists on innocent communities," the ministry said.

According to Reuters, an army spokeswoman said, "The army is working day and night to thoroughly remove the armed organizations here in Ituri."

In recent months, the Codeco organization has been accused of conducting operations against civilians.

It is responsible for the deaths of at least a dozen people at a church in March and another 60 in February.
