After a day of unrest across the nation, Interior Minister Antoine Diome made the announcements during a late-night news conference.

Social media sites including Facebook and WhatsApp had been disabled, according to Mr. Diome.

The southern city of Ziguinchor, whose mayor is Sonko, saw some of the bloodiest fights.

The opposition leader might not be able to run for president the following year due to the prison sentence, which was imposed without his presence.

He was judged responsible for immoral behavior but not for rape.

According to the decision, he was deemed to have behaved immorally toward a person under the age of 21. The accusations were the result of complaints made by a massage therapist. He denied doing anything wrong.

Following the fatal turmoil, the Senegalese government promises to take all necessary measures to protect people and property.
