The Principal of Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) Mr. Mintah Bieni has asserted that the school has effected the laid down measures outlined by the president of Ghana to prevent any student from contracting the novel COVID-19.

He informed that the Personal Protective Equipments (PPEs) promised by government have been received and are been distributed to students and stakeholders of the school while the obligatory practices are been carried out.

“The government promised to provide us with PPEs to shield us from catching COVID-19. We have gone for our share from the Mayor’s house,” he confirmed when speaking with SoireeNews.

“Whoever reported yesterday and today had their temperatures checked, hands washed and disinfected with alcohol-based sanitizers.

“We have set a table to take care of their registration in order to assign them to their various dormitories and have their health monitored as well. Facemasks and sanitizers have also been given to each one to equip themselves from contracting the disease. Its day two and we have heard nothing worrying,” he added.

The final year and gold students resumed school after more than three months of break due to the outburst of the coronavirus. SHS 3 students according to the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his 12th Address on Sunday, June 21, 2020, will be in school for a total of six weeks, before sitting for the WASSCE exams over a period of two weeks.

“SHS 2 Gold Track students, who are returning to complete their first semester like their Green Track colleagues have done, will be in school for six (6) weeks, before going on vacation.

“A maximum of twenty-five students will be permitted in each class. All-day students in schools with boarding houses will be resident in these boarding houses, whilst day students, in schools without boarding facilities, will commute from home, and will be required to adhere to enhanced hygiene protocols; eating in dining halls will be in appropriate numbers; and no visitors to the schools will be allowed.

“There will be no mass gatherings and no sporting activities. Religious activities, under the new protocols, will be permitted. Social distancing and the wearing of face masks are obligatory in our schools,” the president revealed.

The Principal disclosed that the orders of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will be adhered to, yet certain protocols due to challenges would be redirected by the school authorities to ensure better configuration and safety. He spoke that all the final year students would be allowed to stay in the various dormitories but the level two students due to inadequate boarding facilities would have to strategize with the new normal.

He resolved that Gold track learners from remote areas will be accommodated in the school together with the final years, however; level two students living in the suburbs of Kumasi would be allowed to come from home under strict guidelines.

“All the final year students can be housed for the time been. We have some dormitories left as well for a few Gold students (level two) so we have decided to accommodate the distant students and guide those from the suburbs in Kumasi making sure that they adhere to the laid down protocols,” he said.

On converting a classroom to be used as isolation center, Mr. Mintah Bieni responded that although the classrooms are not enough yet a face-lift is ongoing in a chamber in the school to be used for isolation when the need arises.

“We do not have enough classrooms to b used an isolation center. Meanwhile, we have located a place that could be utilized when we are done with renovation works as soon as possible.”

He advised that “students should adhere to the protocols and avoid contracting coronavirus.”
