Ghana has reached a grim milestone in terms of road traffic accidents with 771 persons dying between January and March this year alone amid the ongoing pandemic.

The Bono East Regional boss for National Road Safety Authority, Mr Emmanuel Acheampong Perry has said, from January to June 2021, the Authority has recorded 162 road accidents with 66 deaths and 235 people sustaining injuries.

He however blamed 37 of the 66 accidents on Pragia riders.

Speaking on Ark news monitored by Soiree News, the Road safety boss expressed worry on how the riders are not complying with road safety regulations causing the rise in accidents involving motorbikes in the area.

Mr Acheampong called on owners of motorbikes and Pragia to desist from employing underage riders as it is against the law, saying most of these under ages do not qualify to obtain a rider’s license to make them eligible road users.

He said it is a worry how these unqualified riders are taking the lives of people due to the negligence with which they operate.

Mr Acheampong however charged all road users to comply with the wearing of Helmet, obeying Road traffic Regulations and reducing speed when needful.

This chilling revelation forms part of data collated by the Motor Traffic & Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

This essentially means more people have died due to road carnage in the period than the number of lives cumulatively claimed by the novel coronavirus since the country recorded its first two cases back in March 2020.

As of April 3, 2021, the Ghana Health Service put the mortality rate of the virus at 752.

However, the latest figures from the Police paint a rather unfortunate picture as road accidents within the first quarter surpass Covid-19 casualties so far with another 4700 suffering various injuries in the process.\
