Bono: Bushfires, Herdsmen Causes Deforestation

The Sunyani District Manager of the Forestry Commission, Mr. Brobbey has disclosed that bushfires and activities of Fulani herdsmen and their cattle are the main cause of deforestation in the area.

He disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent Nana Anfreh Damanata on Wednesday morning.

Mr. Brobbey revealed this in an interview with Nana Anfreh on the progress of work on the Green Ghana, program that took place last year in his operational area.

According to him last year their target was 100,000 but at the end of the exercise, they were able to plant over 263,000.

He explained that bushfires and activities of Fulani herdsmen had destroyed some of the plantations.

Furthermore, he said protection of forest reserves is a shared responsibility for all and so, therefore, called on traditional authorities, the MM/DAs, the Media, and all stakeholders to come on board to combat the menace.

He also commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo for showing leadership, for introducing the Green Ghana project to recapture our lost forest.

This year the Sunyani District of the Forest Service of the Forestry Commission is expected to plant 600,000 trees he said.
