American rapper Meek Mill expresses desire to become Ghanaian citizen

On March 4, 2024, the singer shared on his X account that he want to switch nationalities, with Ghana being his top choice. This is when the news broke.

Motives for the Choice Meek Mill, whose true name is Robert Rihmeek Williams, stated that his desire for a fresh start was motivated by the systematic struggles that Black people in America endure.

As a child growing up in the US, he saw firsthand how the system consistently undermined black men, making them feel defenseless and excluded. This sentiment was encapsulated in his tweet: “I wanna get citizenship in Ghana!!! America made to tear black men down if you don’t follow orders!”

Social media users responded wildly to the rapper's statement.

Ghanaians conversed passionately about the ramifications of Meek Mill's decision, both at home and overseas. His decision was well received by several, who noted Ghana's deep cultural legacy, friendly people, and historical connections to the African diaspora. Others, however, brought up legitimate worries, such as the recent enactment by the Ghanaian Parliament of a bill that is anti-LGBTQ.

They made the observation that some American-accepted behaviors might not be in line with Ghanaian customs.
