Martin Odegaard is expected to not remain on loan at Real Sociedad for a second season as Zinedine Zidane wants him to return to Real Madrid ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

Everything seemed to indicate that the 21-year-old would soon head back to San Sebastian to take part in their pre-season preparations, depending on how his right knee is doing, but Los Blancos' elimination from the Champions League changed everything.

La Real and Real Madrid agreed one year ago that Odegaard would join the Basque side on a two-year loan deal, but legality issues meant that they had to do it as a one plus one agreement, so there was always the chance that the loan spell could be cut short this summer.

Unlike a few days ago, those in charge at Real Sociedad are not optimistic about having the Norwegian playmaker in their ranks next season.

Odegaard had been one of La Real's stars last season and they thought they would be able to rely on him for the upcoming campaign too, given that the player himself had regularly said that he would like to stay for the second year of the deal.

However, Zidane's desire to have him in his ranks means that Odegaard will remain in the Spanish capital.

Perhaps it is because of this possibility that Real Sociedad have been linked with some playmakers in the last few days.
