Information gathered from Tutu Akuapem, in the Akuapem North Municipality in the Eastern Region of Ghana indicates, that a young man believed to be in his thirty’s was arrested by the Mampong District Police Command based on a tip of by an unknown resident for collecting GH 5 as a registration fee per SIM on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.

It is alleged, that the said young man is a resident of Tutu Akuapem but was consulted to undertake the registration for the residents due to the unavailability of a SIM registration Centre in and around the community.

An eye witnessed who disclosed this information to the Soiree News Correspondent of the eastern region expressed her disappointment in the police, indicated that it cost the residents of Tutu community GH 10 for every SIM registered outside the town, adding, ‘we have to travel to Akropong, the Municipal capital to register our SIM and the transport cost at least GH 10 in and out so the man was helping us from the risk involve in traveling that far distance.

Moreover, Madam Akromo opined, “am so disgusted over the arrest of this innocent man, and quizzed, why did the government refuse to provide us SIM registration Centre here to avoid such problems”? We shall advise ourselves because we cannot spend Ten Ghana cedis on just a SIM registration and wait for over 5 hours in Akropong in the name of SIM registration, she emphasized”. 

Another Elderly resident who spoke on anonymity said, “we are not afraid to travel to Akropong, but at whose cost?  The government plan to register the SIM is laudable but unfortunately, the process has so far been embarrassing and waste of precious time especially for we the elderly and the nursing mothers”.

The District Command of Mampong Akuapem has assured the public that investigation into the cause of his arrest is ongoing and shall not hesitate to brief the residents when it is completed.

Just recently, a similar arrest was done in the western region of Ghana overcharges on SIM card registration but the fact of the matter is that most registration centers are far from most communities and aside from that, disruptions of networks have also discouraged many people from registering their SIM.
