Western Togoland Saga: Parliament backs Akufo-Addo to deal with secessionists

Ghana’s Parliament says it is in support of any action by the executive arm, to bring under control the increasing crime rate from activities of secessionist groups in the Volta Region.

Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu assured President Akufo-Addo of the legislature’s support for a united Ghana.

 “Presidential and Presidential elections have become part of our democratic rituals and we need to demonstrate to the world that our democracy is strong and it will continue to be a template for many to the World. We all must work to protect the stability and unity in our country. There is a turn in the stability of Ghana in the Volta Region.”

“The President can be assured that he has the full support of the house to deal decisively, ruthlessly with the threat to our country, we can’t afford a disunited Ghana, he is campaigning to lead a united country and Mahama is doing same, so we will support the President fully as Commander in Chief to contain the imminent threat to Ghana and particularly in the Volta Region.”

Deputy Minister of Information, Pius Enam Hadzide has confirmed that 66 individuals have been arrested in connection with attacks in the Volta Region.

In its most recent act of violence, Members of the Homeland Study Foundation on Tuesday, September 29, 2020, attacked the State Transport Corporation (STC) in the Volta Regional capital, Ho, and set ablaze one of its buses.

The members also on Friday, September 25, 2020, also blocked major entries into the Volta Region.

This action left travellers to and from the Volta Region, particularly areas such as Tefle, Tsopoli and Juapong stranded.

The group burnt vehicle tyres and took control of two police stations, freeing suspects and taking weapons from the armoury.
