We’ll Observe Safety Protocols When Compiling New Register – EC

Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) says plans are far advanced for the compilation of a new voters’ register ahead of the 2020 general election, in spite of pressure from Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to boycott the exercise.

The EC has come under fire from various sections of the public, following its plan to overhaul the Voter Management System as the country gears towards the election period.

Critics, mostly from the Opposition National Democratic Congress, have said the EC's plans are unfeasible considering the little time left for the general elections to take place.

The pressure on the EC to shelve its plans intensified, following the coronavirus outbreak in the country, which has forced the government to place a ban on public gatherings.

However, a statement from the EC dated May 11th, said the commission is ready to go on with the exercise when it is greenlighted. Adding that, it will adhere to safety protocols to avoid the spread of the virulent disease.

“The commission is however, sensitive to the current state of affairs due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and will abide by the necessary precautions and safety protocols in the execution of its mandate when it deems it appropriate to begin the compilation of the register”

The EC however cautioned the public to ignore “any fictitious election timetables and other letters circulating on social media purporting to have emanated from the Commission”.
