Agent of Donny van de Beek, Guido Alber has said that the player was prepared to make a move to Real Madrid last season before he suddenly ended at Old Trafford.

He disclosed that the departures of Frenkie De Jong to Barcelona and Juventus's acquisition of Matthijs de Ligt thinned Ajax which converted the Dutch club's interest, and convince the 23-year old to stay for another year.

"Last year, we had already worked towards a move to Real Madrid, but Ajax were against it after the departures of Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt," he told a Dutch podcast.

"He ultimately stayed, but everything was arranged and in place last year."

He confirmed that Real Madrid representatives had travelled to Amsterdam to talk to both Edwin Van der Sar and Marc Overmars, ahead of finalizing a deal for the Dutchman.

"At this meeting, we shook hands and we agreed to keep it quiet for a while until he passed his medical," the agent revealed.

"This summer he would have arrived at Real Madrid."

Donny van de Beek sealed a £35.7m move from Ajax to Manchester United. The Dutch player was confirmed as the first signing for Manchester United on Wednesday afternoon having contributed 10 goals and 11 assists in 37 games last season before the Eredivisie was curtailed.
