Uganda roofing-sheet scandal: Minister refused bail

Police stated earlier this week that the prosecutors had received further files relating to the affair and that arrests may be forthcoming.

Uganda roofing-sheet scandal: Minister refused bail

A second time bail has been rejected for a Ugandan cabinet minister accused in a scandal involving the theft of thousands of metal roofing sheets.

The sureties put up by Mary Goretti Kitutu Kimono's husband and two friends were deemed insufficient by a magistrate at the anti-corruption court.

After entering a not guilty plea to corruption last Thursday about 14,500 corrugated iron sheets that were supposed to be delivered to at-risk villages in the northeastern Karamoja region but never arrived, Mrs. Kitutu was remanded in detention.

The semi-arid territory has seen severe droughts and flooding for decades, making many residents dependent on aid. The 60-year-old politician is the minister for that area.

Some of the stolen metal sheets are allegedly in the possession of at least 10 additional high government officials.

The vice-president, the prime minister, the speaker of the house of representatives, and other ministers are among them.

Those who seized the corrugated iron have been ordered by President Yoweri Museveni to return them or pay the cash equivalent.
