Timo Werner’s move to Liverpool is reportedly a step closer according to The Sun.

The Reds pulled out of the deal following the player’s £52.7million price valuation and RB Leipzig’s decision not to negotiate below regardless of how the coronavirus has financially affected the football market.

Leipzig chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff in an interview with Sport Bild on Sunday cautioned clubs interested in their star man to approach with £52m or forget about selling.

"It won't get any cheaper. We will not sell a player below value if he is under contract for more than a year,” Mintzlaff told Sport Bild.

"In general, we always have to ask the following question, can we replace a player if we sell him for less than his market value?

"But, I only think about those things once I have the facts on the table."

According to the Sun, Werner’s release clause of £52.7million is set to expire on June 15 and Julian Nagelsmann, the manager of the German club has conceded that it will be tough to keep him for next season.

“There is nothing we can do about it. He knows what he has in Leipzig and also what he has with me.

“I show him that — he gets many chances to develop himself.

"I don’t know if it will help him that much if I tell him every day.

“A player has to feel that he can get better. If he doesn’t feel that, it wouldn’t do any good if I kept on telling him to stay here.

“In the end, it is his life, his career, he can decide that. I can’t think of anything new to say to Timo.”

Werner was on the scoresheet on Monday night after beating Cologne 4-2 and he recorded his 29 goals of the season.
