The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has released figures on road accidents in Ghana which has claimed many lives.

According to the Authority, about 771 persons died from January to March 2021 through road crushes. Per the statistics, a total of 2,560 accident cases were reported with 517 persons killed between January to February 2021. Out of which 1,581 were commercial vehicle cases whiles 974 were motorcycle cases in the same period.

The Director of Planning and Programmes, Mr David Osafo Adonteng in an exclusive interview on Joynews television, monitored by Soireenews correspondent, Abdul Sammed Gurundari on Monday, April 12, 2021, said NRSA exists to reduce the incidence of road traffic fatalities (death) through education.

He said the Authority has collaborated with the media for platforms to inform the public on best practices on the roads to help reduce carnages. According to him, if many financial resources and attention are given to the National Safety Authority in managing accidents on the roads, the rate of motor accidents in Ghana will reduce.

He further called on all stakeholders to put seriousness in the fight in order to safeguard lives.

The current accidents situation is alarming with the Regional distribution - Greater Accra has 89 cases, Ashanti 108 cases, Eastern 91 cases, Central 29 cases, Western 30 cases, Volta 17 cases, Northern 10, Upper West 9, Upper East 26, Bono 15, Bono East 27, Ahafo 10, Oti 8, Savannah 33 and Western North 20.

The NRSA also showcased a video documentary put together by Joy News at the Ghana Shippers House in Accra which was brought to politicians, civil society groups and the public to see the extend of carnages on roads of Ghana.
