Project Big Picture should be applauded instead of criticized - Rick Parry
Rick Parry, EFL Chairman

English Football League (EFL) chairman Rick Parry has maintained his stance that ‘Project Big Picture’ is a radical solution to a better reformation system of English football and must be embraced instead of facing critics by the Premier League and other football pundits.

The English Football League (EFL) chairman has stated that the coronavirus pandemic only exposed the structure, for it was already fragmented and needed fixing; a decision clubs were looking up to the Premier League to come out with which never happened.

“It’s a broken system, it was broken before COVID,” Parry told White and Jordan on talkSPORT.

“From our perspective, what ‘Big Picture’ does is address every single one of those equalities.

“The Premier League could have come up with a plan at any time, the fact two of our leading clubs have come up with a plan, I really don’t think it’s to be criticized and should be applauded

“A lot of the reaction has been hysterical.

Fenway Sports Group started in 2017 started to draft a reform which would see a radical change to football governance, accelerated by the coronavirus pandemic due to the financial situation facing many EFL clubs. It revision includes plans to reduce the Premier League to 18 teams, abolish the League Cup and Community Shield, which would give greater power to the 'big six', known as ‘Project Big Picture.’

Manchester United quickly jumped to support the idea along with Rick Parry in an article published by the Daily Telegraph last Sunday, October 11, 2020.

The Premier League released a statement to reprove the approach and expressed disappointment in the former Liverpool Chief Executive saying, “In the Premier League's view, a number of the individual proposals in the plan published today could have a damaging impact on the whole game and we are disappointed to see that Rick Parry, Chair of the EFL, has given his on-the-record support.”

Rick believes the restructuring will empower the English game and help to overcome the challenges clubs are going through.

“People have seen it’s a power grab but I don’t see it that way, I look at the benefits for us and if it’s taken two of our leading clubs to come up with a plan, let’s congratulate them and hopefully make something radical happen because we need radical solutions,” he added.

“We should look at what benefits the pyramid as a whole.”
