Ghana President, Nana Akufo-Addo Dankwa will on Thursday embark on a trip to the West African country of Mali in a conflict mediation mission.

The trip will be Akufo-Addo’s first foreign travel after he closed the country’s borders in the advent of the COVID-19 outbreak.

President Akufo-Addo and his colleagues from Niger, Senegal, and Ivory Coast have been tasked by the African Union to lead a mediation effort to resolve the political impasse in Mali.

Akufo-Addo just completed a 14-day self-isolation exercise over COVID-19 fears last Sunday.

He had been in self-isolation since July 4, 2020.

The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah speaking at a press briefing on the country's COVID-19 management yesterday, said the President has been cleared to resume work after testing negative for the virulent disease.

What is happening in Mali

Opposition groups in Mali have been calling for president Keïta to stand down over his handling of Mali’s long-running violence by armed militant groups, an economic crisis and the disputed elections.

They have also rejected recommendations by the ECOWAS team for the formation of a unity government and reconstitution of the country’s top court which overturned the disputed legislative elections held in March.

They say their demand is simple – president Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta must resign.

However, ECOWAS has said it will not support the removal of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.
