New Kenyan president signals end of subsidies

Kenyan President William Ruto issued directives to undo some of his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta's actions on his first day in office.

Six judges proposed by the Judicial Service Commission three years prior were rejected by Mr. Kenyatta on the grounds that they were "tainted," but President Ruto has appointed them.

On Wednesday, the six judges will be sworn in.

The new leader also said he will end fuel and food subsidies. They were expensive and ineffective, he claimed.

A rollback of Mr. Kenyatta's order that saw port services transferred to Naivasha toe repayment of a Chinese loan taken for the construction of a railway between the port of Mombasa and the capital, according to Mr. Ruto, who also stated that all cargo clearance would be returned to Mombasa port, was also announced.

The policy positions were part of Mr. Ruto's campaign promises.
