The Media is Wrongfully Speculating about MPs Contracting Covid-19 – Majority Leader

The leadership of Ghana’s Parliament has debunked media reports suggesting that some Members of Parliament (MPs) have tested positive for Covid-19.

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu described the media reports as "speculative journalism."

"So just to emphasise the point that what that medium [media house] has done, amounts to nothing but speculation. They are only speculating that two Members have tested positive. Its speculative journalism. We would want to let you know that there is no truth in that” he said

The majority leader mentioned that, though MPs have been instructed to mandatorily test for covid-19, the exercise is being done confidentially.

"...anybody who tested positive, the information will not be transmitted to all of us. It is between the person and the people who did the test. Some confidentiality is required in these matters and we needed to be very circumspect."

A statement from Parliament has refuted the reportage by Starrfmonline which suggested that two MPs and 13 staff of the lawmaking chamber have tested positive for Covid-19 after testing.

The statement, signed by the head of the Public Affairs Department of Parliament, Ms Kate Addo, and copied to soireenews.com, said the result of the covid-19 testing exercise is yet to be known.

Parliament has ordered Starrfm to accordingly retract the publication.
