A political expert, Rev. Nana Takyi Asiedu has described the Majority in Parliament’s criticisms on Mahama Ayariga's Free Tertiary Education as is laudable.

The Bawku Central NDC legislature Mr. Mahama Ayariga recently raised a motion in parliament that seeks to get the President to suspend the payment of fees in public tertiary institutions for a year due to the negative impact of COVID-19.

His motion has been heavily opposed by the NPP, majority caucus in parliament.

This decision by both Minority (NDC) and the majority (NPP)has been greeted with lots of controversies as some backs the minority while others back the majority.

Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu has expressed his disappointment in the majority caucus of Parliament after they rejected a motion by Bawku Central MP asking the government to absorb tertiary fees this year amidst the Coronavirus.

According to Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, the outcome was a blow to the prospects for collaboration between the New Patriotic Party caucus and National Democratic Congress caucus in Parliament.

He further advocated that the NDC caucus may pay back the Majority group following the unsuccessful motion.

Nevertheless, a political analyst, Rev. Nana Takyi Asiedu has rallied behind the majority stating that “the majority's opposition against Mahama Ayarega’s motion is laudable to some extent.”

According to him, the NPP government has not made any budget provisions for free Tertiary education hence it may affect the country's economy.

He later added that the decision can also have a negative impact on the NPP government in their next election because all parents having their wards in Tertiary education and the students at large might vote against them.
