Madagascar minister sacked for condemning Russia at UN

According to sources, Madagascar's president fired the nation's foreign minister because he supported a UN resolution denouncing Russian referendums to seize portions of Ukraine's land.

Without consulting the rest of the cabinet, Richard Randriamandrato moved forward with the vote, according to AFP, citing state TV network TVM.

This was the reason he was fired, according to two people in the president's office, Reuters news agency said.

The motion to denounce Russia over the referendums, which the majority of the international community believed to be a farce, received votes from 142 additional nations.

As with several other African nations, Madagascar has until this point maintained a neutral stance on the conflict in Ukraine.

African nations made up the majority of the absentee nations. Only Belarus, Nicaragua, Russia, Syria, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea voted against the resolution.
