The Kwabre East Municipal Social Welfare Director, Miss Agnes Boakyewaa has requested the general public to help promote the child rights promotion in the country, an activity aimed at ensuring that children are protected from violence, abuse and exploitation.

Per her counsel, the creation of awareness on children rights and protection, Community care and Justice administration is to awaken the populace to be abreast on the need to shelter the defenceless in their various communities to improve their wellbeing through the promotion of social development with equity for the disadvantaged, the vulnerable, persons with disabilities and the excluded.

The Kwabre East Municipal Assembly Social Welfare Directorate on Wednesday, September 30, 2020, engaged the Asonomaso Community and educated them on Child privileges and Security at the Asonomaso Presbyterian Church.

Education on the detriment of the various forms of abuse on the minor and how to raise them effectively for the benefit of Ghana was communicated to parents, guardians and children present at the event.

Briefing the press after the program, Miss Agnes Boakyewaa alerted that the Social Welfare in such a time is in its defensive status towards children, mentioning that mistreats from guardians these days have intensified as all forms of abuse are aimed at the minors which distract their righteous growth.

She disclosed that the creation of awareness by the department under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social protection provides room for the child and the vulnerable to convey challenging situations for resolutions.

“We can’t stand to watch children get involved in abusive cases before we act. We are creating awareness for the young who are facing challenges to report to the social welfare or the zonal councils.

"If they have no knowledge about who is ready to help them put an end to problems, there is no way they will open up.

"They can even confide and talk to their teachers or pastors, assemblyman or unit committee for help. When they are informed, social service will come to their aid."

"We work with the police, court, DOVVSU (Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit) and other bodies. We have no right to arrest parents or guardians maltreating their wards, yet when we are informed, the various disciplinary bodies are notified to take action to prevent the act.

"The social welfare defends the child in and makes sure that the right thing is done.”

The Kwabre East DOVVSU Coordinator, ASP. Comfort Yaa-Yaa Ankrah admonished that the support Unit is very alert to help free ill-treatments targeted on the minors and vulnerable especially in cases of defilement, therefore committers of the act should take caution.

She advised families to quit settling sexual offences and report them for offenders to be put behind bars; a decent way to prevent a repetition which threatens lives.

“Defilement cases are not settled in court or police station. It comes with a direct sentence because any approach to free lawbreakers endangers the future of the children.

“Families must put an end to sitting on cases of sexual offences. It is the duty of DOVVSU to protect the right of the child and cuff perpetrators.”
