kick out students culpable in WASSCE riots from Boarding house- GES directs schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has instructed school authorities to deboardenise any student found to have participated in recent protests and vandalism activities recorded in some Senior High Schools.

The directive comes after viral videos on social media platforms showed some students perpetrating acts of violence and vandalising school properties over purported strict invigilation.

On Thursday for instance, students of Bright Senior High School at Kukurantumi in the Eastern Region attacked officials of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) supervising the exercise.

A journalist with the Daily Graphic in the Region who had gone to the school to report has also been assaulted by the students leaving him with severe injuries.

Students of Ndewura Jakpa Senior High Technical in Damongo in the West Gonja Municipality have reportedly vandalised school’s properties in protest against the 1.5-meter social distancing sitting in the examination hall.

The GES in a statement signed by its Director-General, Prof Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, described the act by the students as appalling.

The statement said any destruction of school property should be surcharged against students found guilty of the riot adding that criminal acts committed should be reported to the police for investigation.

“Directors have been directed to take actions on all such misconduct and submit reports to the Director-general immediately.”

The GES implored parents to stop making pleas on behalf of their wards, but rather advise them to ‘maintain high sense of discipline to and comportment.’
