J Derobie has emphatically stated that he is the new face of Ghanaian dancehall.

The budding dancehall artiste said this while reacting to claims that he does not look like his predecessors in the genre.

According to him, he is on the scene to reinvent the perception that people have concerning the genre.

A dancehall artist does not have to look unkempt before he is accepted, he noted.

“People say I don’t look like a dancehall artiste but I just feel I am a new look to them. This is a different person. Dancehall comes in different ways and I am one of them”.

“I am not going to change from me because I do dancehall and people expect me to look a certain way. I portray the other side of what other dancehall artistes should look like”.

He said this while speaking in an interview with NY DJ on Y102.5FM’s Ryse N Shyne radio show.

The artiste however said that he leaves his calm nature at the entrance of every show or performance he is billed for.

“When I mount stages, it is a different situation altogether. I am not my calm self at all. The music and crowd is something that drives me”.

J Derobie maintained that he broke through the mould into the music industry after being selected Mr Eazi’s Empawa100 music project, he had been working feverishly underground for three years.

“I did not get on Empawa so easily. It was hard work. I have also been underground since 2015… One thing, I will say, I did differently was that I love to learn more,” he noted.

J.Derobie, whose real name is Derrick Obuobi Jnr. is widely known for his smash hit single "Poverty" after toot caught the attention of Jamaican dancehall guru Popcaan who featured on the song's remix.

He made an entry into the Empawa100 music project last year and has since excelled, securing a spot with the Dancehall, Reggae, and Afrobeats genres.
