Ghana's parliament has suspended most of its activities for three weeks.

This comes after at least 17 MPs and 151 staff members were infected with the coronavirus.

This was contained in a statement from Parliament dated February 9, 2021.

"Having regard to the upsurge in coronavirus cases in the House ... I have, in consultation with leadership, decided that the sitting of the House be suspended for three weeks," Speaker Alban Bagbin told parliament.

The House will be suspended from Wednesday, February 10, 2021, to Tuesday, March 2, 2021.

However, the Speaker said that parliament's appointments committee would continue to meet to consider the ministerial nominees of Akufo-Addo, who was re-elected in December.

"It is hoped that within this period of adjournment, the Appointments Committee will commence consideration and public hearing of the President's nominees for Ministerial appointments," the Speaker said.

"By the end of the three weeks, the Appointments Committee would have submitted reports on the referral for the consideration of the House".

Ghana has reported 72,328 infections and 472 coronavirus-related deaths, some of the highest totals in West Africa.
