Fresh protests in Somaliland over election delay

Sunday's protests against the two-year extension of President Muse Bihi Abdi's term in the self-declared republic of Somaliland reportedly resulted in several injuries.

The opposition Waddani and UCID parties labeled the administration as "illegitimate," which sparked the protests.

The first term of President Bihi was set to expire on Sunday, but lawmakers decided to extend it by two years last month. This came after the electoral commission requested a postponement of the polls due to logistical and financial issues.

In November 2017, the president was first put into office.

According to Waddani and UCID parties, he is no longer recognized as president.

Police have urged residents to stay inside their houses and have cautioned against more demonstrations.

In August, when police opened fire on pro-opposition supporters who were calling for elections, several people died and numerous others were injured.

Somaliland, which declared independence from the rest of Somalia in 1991, faces threats to its relative stability as a result of the disagreements over the president's term.
