Officials in the Dominican Republic reported that actor Ray Liotta, who appeared in the gangster classic "Goodfellas," died at the age of 67.

Liotta's agency confirmed the actor's death, claiming he died peacefully in his sleep under no unusual circumstances.

The actor was in the Dominican Republic filming "Dangerous Waters," a new film.

"We hear that he was accompanied by his (fiancee), and the (fiancee) requests that you respect her sadness," said a representative for the Dominican Republic's General Direction of Cinema.

In his hotel room bed, the actor was discovered dead. His body was transported to the forensic institute in Santo Domingo, the country's capital, by emergency personnel.

But it was in 1990 when he was cast with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci in one of director Martin Scorsese's classics, "Goodfellas," that he got his big break.

Liotta's death elicited a variety of reactions from Hollywood celebrities. Robert De Niro, who co-starred with him in "Goodfellas," expressed his sorrow at his passing.
