Buhari is seeking the backing of his party in selecting his successor.

President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria met with state governors from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party on Tuesday, requesting the right to choose his successor.

Later this week, the party will hold primaries to select its presidential candidate.

The elections are scheduled for February of the following year.

The president stated the party's nominee "must be someone who will give the Nigerian populace a sense of success and confidence even before the polls" in his address to the governors.

"I would like to seek the governors' reciprocity and support in selecting my successor, who would fly the flag of our party for election into the position of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2023," he said during the meeting held at the presidential palace in Abuja.
