Anguished family members of a Zambian student who died while serving Russia as a mercenary in Ukraine welcomed the body's return to Lusaka airport on Sunday.

Last month, Lemekhani Nathan passed away.

He was allegedly recruited by the Wagner paramilitary group while he was serving a drug-related prison sentence in a Russian jail.

Before passing away "a hero," Wagner claimed that he had enlisted voluntarily.

Zambia has asked for a thorough justification.

According to a family spokesman quoted by the AFP news agency, the body would be taken to a morgue for an autopsy before being buried.
