A manhunt for many suspects is underway after a shooting in downtown Sacramento, California, early Sunday morning that left six people dead and 12 more injured.
"Investigators are seeking to find the perpetrators of this heinous crime. We know there was a major brawl right before the shootings. We've also established that there are many shooters "Chief Katherine Lester of the Sacramento Police Department said on Sunday afternoon.
According to Lester, three males and three women were slain, and the injured were taken to local hospitals. She said the coroner's office is seeking to identify and notify the victims' families.
According to Lester, investigators were questioning several witnesses and recovering hundreds of pieces of evidence from the site, including a stolen firearm.
Officers heard gunfire, rushed to the scene
At the site, she added, police operated alongside members of the California Highway Patrol and the Sacramento Fire Department. "Every single one of our agencies attempted to save lives."
According to authorities, social media video appears to show an incident before the shooting. "We are currently investigating to see whether there is any link between these occurrences and the shooting," the statement stated.
When the shooting began, a big crowd gathered in the area, although it was unclear whether the mob was tied to a specific venue or event, according to Lester.
According to the chief, members of the public have provided tips and videos relevant to the shooting, and a portion of the incident was filmed by a nearby police camera.
"We are stunned and devastated by this tragedy," Lester said, "but we are also determined as an organization to uncover those guilty and bring justice to the victims and their families."
Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg described the incident as a "senseless and inexcusable tragedy" that left Sacramento with a "broken heart."
He stated, "Thoughts and prayers are insufficient." "It is past time to have a rational discussion on guns in America. We have a disease — a disease in our country and a disease in our culture."
He stated that Sacramento would continue to engage in youth violence prevention and early intervention programs.
"In our city, we will assess the situation and do everything we can to safeguard the people on the investment, public safety, and gun fronts."
President Joe Biden called Sacramento "another town devastated by gun violence" and urged Congress to pass gun control legislation.
"Six people were killed and at least a dozen more were injured in a single act in Sacramento. Families were forever altered. Survivors are left to mend both obvious and invisible wounds "In a statement, he stated.
