The chief registrar of judiciary administered the oath of office to the new president.

Raila Odinga, Mr. Ruto's opponent, declined to attend the ceremony because to "severe doubts" about the election results.

In the suburbs of Nairobi, the country's capital, a stadium with 60,000 seats was used for the inauguration.
