Liverpool have confirmed that Virgil van Dijk has undergone a successful injury.

The defender damaged his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in the Reds Merseyside derby following Jordan Pickford’s reckless challenge on the player in the yard.

The 29-year-old will be out for several months although the Reds have not entirely ruled him out of the season.

“Virgil van Dijk has undergone surgery on the knee ligament injury he sustained earlier this month,” Liverpool confirmed on Friday morning.

“The Liverpool defender’s planned operation took place in London and was conducted successfully.

“Van Dijk will now immediately focus on the beginning of his rehabilitation with the support of the Reds’ medical department.

“No timeframe has been placed on the Dutchman’s return to action.”

The Dutchman’s position was filled by Fabinho who featured at centre back in the Reds 1-0 victory against Ajax and their 2-1 Premier League win against Sheffield.

The Brazilian was forced off on Tuesday after a hamstring injury in the Reds 2-1 victory over FC Midtjylland in the Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp during his pre-match announced that the Brazilian is ruled out for the visit of West Ham to Anfield, leaving Joe Gomez as the active centre back for Liverpool.

Joel Matip is expected to run from injury against the London team, with Rhys Williams hoping to be available for the Reds fixture on Saturday.
