The president of Nigeria has denounced the weekend murder of a renowned Islamic preacher in Yobe, a state in the country's northeast.

Sheikh Goni Aisami was attacked, and President Muhammadu Buhari called it "an unprovoked and cold-blooded murder."

A soldier is alleged to have shot and killed Sheikh Aisami in the Karasuwa region.

Two individuals have been taken into custody in relation to the homicide.

"Punish the perpetrators of this horrific atrocity without haste, and flush out other elements with such criminal tendencies," the president ordered the military.

The murder of Sheikh Aisami has drawn strong criticism in Nigeria.
