Gini Wijnaldum says Liverpool must start winning games to prove they can handle the weight after going five games without a win in the Premier League.

The Reds after their 7-0 demolishing of Crystal Palace have suffered four draws and a loss to Southampton and lie fourth, separated by a point between Jose Mourinho’s Spurs who are on 33.

Liverpool failed to catch up Manchester United after a goalless draw at Anfield on Sunday as they look forward to closing the gapas the League enter round two.

Gini Wijnaldum has told that winning games will divert the pressure on the clubs above them and that will help determine whether they can keep up with the competition.

“Well, we just have to show that we can deal with it,” he told Liverpoolfc.com

“I don’t think the past will help you 100 per cent, we still have to show that we can deal with the pressure, to deal with being at the top of the table.

“We just have to put the pressure on all the other teams by winning games and then we will see who can handle the pressure and who can’t. Even though we know how it is to be there, we still have to work hard to stay there and even come in first place again.

“So you cannot rely on what happened in the past. It is a new year, a new situation, the competition is another competition… so we all have to deal with that and at the end we will see who deals the best with it.”

The Reds will play Burnley on Thursday at Anfield, and the midfielder sees the Clarets as a strong opposition and winning against them requires concentration on the game.

Sean Dyche’s side secured a point from the Reds at home when Jay Rodriguez’s 69-minute goal cancelled Andrew Robertson’s 34-minute header.

The Dutchman reveals the game is “a really big challenge.”

“Also because if you look at the previous years we played against them it was never an easy game. It was always a game where we had to fight to get the points.

“You could see it last season when we drew against them at home… so if you look at the history you see that every time when we play against them we have to give more than 100 per cent to win the game.

“So it’s going to be a really big challenge to win the game against them.”
