We'll vote skirt and blouse if bridge is not fixed - Angry Sokwai residents to Hon. Benito Owusu
Broken Bridge at Sokwai

Residents of Sokwai-Akwaboa and surrounding towns in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District have vowed to vote Hon. Benito Owusu Bio to opposition due to his failure to restore their bridge that has bowed from operation for a year now.

SoireeNews reported on the threat the span is posing towards drivers and passengers few months ago yet the damage seems widening.

Constituents believe voting ‘skirt and blouse’ would help resolve the challenge and put an end to the bridge fears, therefore, caution has been sent to the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources not to make the Sokwai-Akwaboa and affected communities his campaign grounds for votes in before December 7.

“Benito (MP) goes on Radio claiming that he has fixed 70 percent of our roads which is never true. He should not even attempt to pass by this bridge to our towns and campaign for votes here.

“If the Bridge is constructed, we have no issues with him. Until then, he should never try to come and deceive us for votes,” Ibrahim, a taxi driver warned.

The bridge located at the outskirts of Sokwai has one side collapsed whiles the other is slowly been washed away by flood whenever there is a heavy downpour. Below the bridge is soaked with water suspending the side plied by drivers and pedestrians little by little. It has become a time bomb and could go off any given time.

Using it at night is life-endangering especially by strangers.

“It’s sad. All the quarry cars from Sokwai to Akwaboa and Apaso ply through this road. The bridge has been in a terrific state for a year now and it keeps stunning day in and out.

"We have informed the District Chief Executive and MP yet no one has made effort to help build the span. This is more of a trap and we don’t have to wait for lives to be endangered before construction. This is much dangerous than COVID-19 because if a vehicle falls into this bridge, a lot of lives would be lost,” Nana Nsiah, a poultry farmer addressed.

Some of the residents accused the Member of Parliament of trading for votes during the parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party for the Atwima Nwabiagya North Constituency to retain his seat.

“We have been complaining of this mess for a year now. Benito conspired with delegates to retain him during the primaries yet we will not be part of the voting in the upcoming elections,” a woman angrily said.

“A truck nearly fell in this- it took the intervention of strong men to pull it back. If Benito does not construct the Bridge for safe passage, we will vote skirt and blouse. The fact that he has been chosen by delegates does not mean it is over.

“There is nothing he has done to improve the state of living in this community. Although it is not the MP's responsibility to work on roads yet it is his duty to make sure that our poor infrastructures are attended to,” she added.
