The Head of the Public Relations Department of the Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly in the Greater Accra Region, Mr. Julius Nunoo Sarpei, has dispelled the claim made by some individual personalities to the effect that the Assembly has not given them notice before the demolition of unauthorized structures erected on the open spaces in New Weija Choice area stretching from Mallam-Junction in Accra
He described the allegations leveled against the Assembly headed by Mr. Patrick Kwesi Brako Kumor as a completely baseless, saying that the Assembly is a law-abiding public institution and that it has given a three weeks' notice before it went to these areas within the municipality to carry out what he describes as a lawful demolition exercise.
"We have even written eviction warning notice all over on all the various structures we have earmarked in these unauthorized areas and started the actual date that the Assembly would carry the demolition exercise," Mr. Sarpei cleared the air on the matter.
Speaking in an interview with Soireenews. com, Mr. Sarpei on behalf of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Assembly, Mr. Patrick Kwesi Brako Kumor, Mr. Sarpei confirmed that the Assembly on Monday, June 20, 2022, demolished scores of illegal wooden structures, kiosks, food vending joints, shops and container stores including brothels along with the New Weija Choice on the Accra-Kasoa–Winneba-Cape Coast Highway.
He stated that the decision to demolish the structures in these unauthorized areas has followed an official petition from some residents to the Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly and copied to the Weija District Police Station.
He pointed out that some of the structures believed to be brothels used for prostitution were alleged to be rented out to criminals who attack, terrorize and rape unsuspecting visitors and residents along the Accra Kasoa highway at night.
He cited the current incident when the two young ladies were attacked and virtually raped by criminals in the New Weija Choice Area.
He asserted that the New Weija Choice area which was closed to West Hills Mall had become a hub for commercial sex workers with more than a thousand five hundred scattered structures used as brothels.
According to him, the situation has generated some insecurity for residents, tourists, drinking fans, and holidaymakers hence the move by the Assembly with the tacit support of police and military officers to clear the unauthorized structures in the area.
He mentioned that the complaints of the residents also touched on how commercial sex workers were chasing some men mostly in the afternoons and at night to patronage their sex activities which are causing insecurity in the area.
Mr. Saiper stressed that the Assembly and police officers from Weija District Police Command will continue monitoring the place to ensure the structures are not re-erected.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) stated that the Assembly would continue its demolition exercise today (Tuesday, June 21, 2022, to other places within the municipality to demolish structures in the unauthorized public spaces to ensure free movement of the vehicles and persons.
