Sadio Mane has refused to admit Liverpool as winners of the Premier League judging from the points accumulated, disclosing in an interview that the Reds victory on Saturday evening against Norwich is a step ahead of winning the title.

Mane scored the only goal in the game at Carrow Road to give Liverpool their 25th victory out of 26 Premier League fixtures under Jurgen Klopp.

It was his first game after suffering an injury against Wolverhampton Wanderers three weeks ago and his 78th minute hit has extended their lead on top to 25 points.

“It was the target from the beginning,” said Mane, when asked about the title by Sky Sports post-match. “We are doing very well. We still have more games, [it’s] one-step.

“We will do everything possible as a team and carry on in the same way. We’ll see what’s going to happen at the end of the season.”

Mane’s goal was his 100th in all competition for England clubs and 75 for the Reds after hitting 25 for Southampton before switching to the Reds in 2016. “Really! Wow, thank you,” he said.

“It was not easy [being out injured]. As a football player, everyone wants to play all the time, but you have to deal with it. I went for some treatment, I worked hard and I came back.

“We are a strong team and the boys do a great job. We are Liverpool, we are a strong team and we’re happy with our result today.”

Liverpool will play Atletico Madrid at the Stadio Metropolitano in Spain on Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League.
