Works at the Kumasi Central market have stalled due to sellers reluctance to leave the old market

The Chairman of Eleven Steering Committee, Mr. Daniel Ankomah has cautioned politicians not to engage themselves in matters involving traders migration to the New Kejetia Market.

The executives of the market voiced that the inconveniencies incurred in some traders unwillingness to evacuate the Central Market for renovations to begin is not partisan but a situation of commerce.

“We need no politicians to engage in matters concerning Central Market traders. This is not partisan,” he said.

 “Quit headlining our issues for your political talk to enable us direct our people to leave for the prepared place. This is beyond NDC (National Democratic Congress) and NPP (New Patriotic Party). This is trade and we are advising them to put a stop to it,” he added.

He also pleaded to sellers who are still trading and have obtained their keys into stores at the Kejetia market to immediately evacuate.

According to the chairman of the Eleven Steering Committee, Mr. Daniel Ankomah, the market women were given the opportunity to sell at the Central market to engage their customers during the Christmas festivities yet they are still adamant of relocating to the designated place after the due time.

He made known that allocation and keys have been handed over to some traders as the committee are still attending to others to get their places.

“Works will soon begin at the Central Market and it is our mandate to make sure that the place is empty before commencement,” he said.

“We are alerting them to abandon the Central Market into the New Kejetia market. The allocations and keys have been given out to the traders to pave way for works to begin. We cannot permit them to continue staying whiles works progresses. No.

"According to information gathered, the building (central market) has begun slumping, a caution to us that the place is no more safe.

“The Eleven Member Steering Committee together with the Powerful Concern Union have agreed to migrate into the Kejetia market therefore we are pleading to our colleagues to embrace that step”, he said.

Mr Ankomah further emphasized that extra days will not be given for sellers to keep transacting business, a decision which has stalled works at the Central Market for some time now.

“There will not be any petitioned day. They should pack and leave the place for work to commence.

Chairman of the Concern Traders Association, Mr. Frank Antwi, also added that traders should adhere to order to avoid political engagements.
