The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr. Oheneba Owusu Danso has acknowledge the president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the leadership qualities exhibited in the fight against the novel coronavirus.

He also commended him for the major supplies received for the Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and the financial incentives to motivate staff of the Ghana Health Service in the COVID-19 fight.

“Your Excellency, this stage I wish to convey to you the special commendation of the Board and Management for the great Leadership exhibited in leading our dear country, Ghana, in our fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are indeed grateful for the major supplies received for Personal Protective Equipments (PPE’s) and also the special financial packages granted staff in the health sector to motivate us in the resilient management against the pandemic,” he said.

 

 

The President of Ghana on April 6, 2020 placed a high priority on the procurement of personal protective equipment (PPEs) for the protection of frontline health workers including insurance packages with an additional 50 percent allowance included in their basic salary for three months.

“An insurance package, with an assured sum of three hundred and fifty thousand cedis (GH¢350,000) for each health personnel and allied professional at the forefront of the fight, has been put in place, with a daily allowance of one hundred and fifty cedis (GH¢150) being paid to contact tracers,” he said whiles addressing the Nation.

The KATH CEO made his words known when the President visited the capital of the Ashanti Region, Kumasi on Friday, May 15, 2020 to reactivate works on the maternity and children’s block project at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

The 800-bed project amongst others will have Emergency reception for children and pregnant women, 10 theatres, intensive care units, an In-vitro Fertilization (IVF) Unit, Breastfeeding center, Paediatric surgery unit, Pharmacy, Dedicated Medical Oxygen Plant, Lecture Halls, Cafeteria, Gift Shop, Bank and other specialist facilities.

 

 

Dr. Danso further updated that as part of the national efforts to help achieve same day delivery of COVID-19 results, management of KATH has facilitated the Laboratory Service Directorate to complete the setup of a COVID-19 testing lab. The Ashanti Regional Health Directorate on May 6 addressed the press and made plans known of decentralizing labs to set up a few in addition to KCCR to help provide coronavirus results without backlogs.

The KATH CEO assured that full operations will begin on Monday, May 18, 2020 to relieve KCCR of some workload and help facilitate prompt delivery of results.

“This follows over three weeks of preparation with all th necessary physical infrastructure, equipment and consumables and very good test runs validated by the Kumasi center for Collaborative Research (KCCR),” he ended.

 

 

Ghana as at May 14 had recorded 5,530 confirmed cases, 674 recoveries, and 24 deaths.

The Asantehene, Nana Osei Tutu II, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei Mensah and representatives of Contracta Construction Company in the United Kingdom were there to grace the occasion.
