US concerned over Sudan freeing diplomat's killer

The release of a Sudanese man this week who was sentenced to death for the murder of a US diplomat 15 years ago has alarmed the US, according to the country.

Abdel-Raouf Abu Zaid, who was convicted of killing John Granville and his Sudanese driver Abdel Rahman Abbas, was released by the Sudanese government on Monday.

On New Year's Day 2008, Islamist militants shot and killed them.

The release was not a result of a deal between the two countries, according to the State Department.

It claimed that the lack of transparency in the legal system worried it.
