For alleged physical assault, Ugandan police have detained a lecturer at the prestigious Makerere University.

In connection with the alleged slapping of a female student last Friday in a lecture classroom, Bernard Wandera of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences is under investigation.

According to reports, the student was a part of a group that kept talking to the lecturer during his lessons.

The event was captured on camera, and Makerere has suspended the lecturer as a result.

In a video that the police have released, a man can be seen cursing and screaming at a young woman while repeatedly slapping her on one end of a lecture hall.

"We vehemently condemn the instructor's behavior because it violates numerous university rules.

Mr. Wandera has not responded to the accusations and has not yet appeared in court.

The oldest and biggest institution in Uganda, Makerere, has previously drawn attention due to charges of sexual harassment and "sex for marks."
