UEFA CL: Salah RESCUE Reds after surrendering three goal lead; Liverpool 4 -3 Salzburg
Salah celebrate his second goal at Anfield

Jurgen Klopp's side kick-started their defence of the Champions League in chaotic fashion at Anfield

Liverpool surrendered a three-goal only to prevail 4-3 against a resolute Red Bull Salzburg.

Liverpool: Adrian, Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, Gomez, Van Dijk, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Henderson, Mane, Salah, Firmino.

Subs: Kelleher, Lovren, Milner, Keita, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lallana, Origi.

Salzburg: Stankovic, Ulmer, Wober, Onguene, Kristensen, Junuzovic, Mwepu, Szoboszlai, Minamino, Hwang, Daka.

Subs: Kohn, Farkas, Ramalho, Ashimeru, Okugawa, Koita, Haaland.

Liverpool’s front three linked up very well early on, with Mané in particular seeing plenty of the ball down the left-hand side in the opening minutes. Salah played a magnificent one-two with Firmino on the opposite flank but the ball was cleared by the Red Bull defense from the area.

Sadio Mane scored his 15th UEFA Champions League goal in the 9th minute. The Senegalese skipped inside Kristensen on the left, laid the ball off to Firmino and continued his run to take the return pass. He continually dink beyond Stankovic.

The Reds kept pedaling down the left through Andrew Robertson. The Scot’s captain was busy down the left linking play with Mane for decisive matters upfront. Salzburg responded well to Mané’s early opener and continued to commit numbers forward, but Henderson, Fabinho and Wijnaldum - as ever – were doing an excellent job of protecting their back four.

A fabulous link-up play between Henderson, Firmino and Salah in the 23-minute almost fashioned another for Liverpool. Klopp applauded enthusiastically on the sidelines.

Two minutes later, Andrew Robertson powered in the second. The Reds left back and Alexander-Arnold famously competed for assists but the Scotsman probably didn't begrudge his fellow full-back as he sparked a move that ended with him turning in a low cross from Alexander-Arnold. The passing of the home side was just a joy to watch at Anfield with every move made likely to result into a goal.

Finally, Salah scored in the 36-minute after keepers rebound toward the Egyptian.

Robertson and Mané once again combined on the left to set up play. Mane swung in a cross that Firmino got his head to at the near post. Stankovic saved, but contrived to push it straight to Salah. The Egyptian didn’t need an invitation.

Salzburg tried to calm down the calm the game after the third goal yet they were lacking the composure in the final third. Hwang charged into the area after receiving a lost ball from the Liverpool captain. He put Van Dijk on his backside with a left-footed dummy before rifling home with his right to pull one back for the visitors. Lovely finish it was.

The visitors shattered Liverpool record of haven gone five UEFA Champions League home games without conceding and keeping nine clean sheets in their last 11 UEFA Champions League outings at Anfield.

Minamino gave the Reds a game to contest after he scored Red Bulls second in the 56-minute. They reduced the deficit further as Minamino volleyed in Hwang's cross.

Haaland, 19, scorer of 17 goals in ten club appearances in 2019/20 including four hat-tricks was introduced for Daka.

Haaland made an immediate impact by levelling the scores for Salzburg at Anfield. It was surely the easiest of the lot as he tapped in Minamino's low cross from one metre out. It took him only two minutes against Genk and after three minutes against Liverpool. The remarkable rise of Erling Braut Haaland continued.

Nine minutes later, the Reds were back in front. Salzburg only had themselves to blame as Szoboszlai failed to clear a danger in the box. Fabinho sent a high ball through to Firmino, who's header was perfect for Salah to smash in.

The Reds ended the game clinging all the points and leaving Salzburg nothing to hold on to.
