Liverpool will have to wait for match day six against Salzburg to decide their fate in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League.

Mertens put Napoli ahead superbly in the first half and Lovren levelled. Liverpool would have to avoid defeat in Salzburg to go through the round of 16.

Klopp’s side had a hectic first 45 minutes from a hard-hitting Italian defense.

Carlo Ancelotti approached the game with a more defensive mentality as his side looked composed against the Reds.

The Reds pressed Napoli in the opening minutes but there was no real rhythm early on at Anfield. A few fouls, lots of possession exhanging, and not much happening in either final third.

Fabinho was down after colliding with Napoli's falling midfielder Zielinski in the 16-minute. It was accidental, but he looked in some pain. WIjnaldum warmed up and later took his spot in the 21-minute.

Napoli went ahead and Van Dijk was down injured.

Mertens went up for an aerial with Van Dijk, barged into him, and it looked like he was hurt. Play continued and Maksimovic engaged Mertens through with a ball over the top. The Napoli foward was through on goal, at an angle, and half-volleyed into the far corner with a brilliant finish. VAR checked for a potential offside and the goal was allowed to stand.

Dejan Lovren gave the Reds the equalizer in the 65-minute from a header empowered from Milner's corner from 12 yards out. There was a brief VAR check for a hand on Mertens but the was allowed after a possible foul protest.

Napoli defended well to prevent the Reds from extending the lead at the top.
