Shakhtar celebrate win against Madrid on Wednesday night

Real Madrid could not complete a comeback to win their first Champions League fixture against Shakhtar Donetsk at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium on Wednesday.

It is the first time the Spanish side have lost three consecutive matches in Champions League matches since  September 1986.

Three first-half goals from Tete, Varane’s own goal and Solomon gave the Ukrainian side the needed victory but Modric and Vinicius two goals were not enough to win the point in their opening game.

Shakhtar wasted a few chances in front of goal before Tete opened the scores in the 29-minute.

Korniienko jostled his way through the heart of the Madrid defence after the ball broke loose to Tetê, whose first-time left-footed shot went through Varane's legs and past Courtois.

Shakhtar were effective and dynamic against a sloppy Madrid side with the defence finding it tough to contain the visitors forward.

Varane scored an own goal to make it two for the away side following a shot by Tete wide on the right which Courtois could only parry. Varane inadvertently poked the rebound past his own keeper to keep them in front.

Three minutes to end the first half, Solomon added a third with Tete being the architect behind the move. He played in Solomon with his magical back-heel as he found himself in enough space - despite a host of retreating defenders to pick his spot.

Zidane brought in Benzema for Rodrygo during the start of the second half to beef up the front line as they began the quest to redeem themselves.

Modric registered his name on the scoresheet nine minutes into the first half from 30 meters out.

Vinicius scored Madrid’s second goal 15 seconds of being introduced in the game for Jovic.

He caught Marlos in possession in his own penalty box before firing past Trubin.

A late equalizer was scored but VAR came to the rescue of the visitors to deny Madrid a goal following Vinicius Jnr’s interfering with play in an offside position.
