According to Nigerian authorities, two separate road incidents on Tuesday resulted in at least 54 fatalities and several injuries.

Children and women were among the victims.

In one of the accidents, two buses collided head-on and caught fire on a route connecting the northeastern cities of Maiduguri and Damaturu, resulting in at least 37 fatalities.

According to a Federal Road Safety Commission of Nigeria employee in the area, some passengers were burned beyond recognition inside the buses.

In the other incident, a passenger bus collided head-on with a truck outside the capital city of Abuja, killing 17 people.

According to the authorities, speeding was to blame for both accidents.

Nigeria has many traffic accidents, which are frequently attributed to substandard roads, poor maintenance of vehicles and disregard for traffic rules.
