Train services suspended ahead of Kenya protests

In preparation for the anti-government demonstrations that opposition leader Raila Odinga has called for on Monday, the Kenya Railways Corporation has halted all passenger train service in the nation's capital, Nairobi.

The Kenya Railways administration explained the choice in a statement on Sunday as being due to "unavoidable circumstances."

We truly apologize for any inconvenience caused to all of our valued customers, it said.

The Nairobi Central Station to Nairobi Terminus commuter trains would all operate on schedule, according to the train operator, between the old railway station in the city center and Nairobi-Mombasa.

In order to demand electoral reforms and a decrease in the cost of necessities, the opposition alliance is staging demonstrations in Nairobi and other cities across the nation.

The protests were prohibited by the police commander on Sunday, but the opposition has insisted that they will still take place in accordance with the law.
