The president of a group calling itself Patriotic Front Movement of Ghana, Mr. Ebenezer Nyamekye has stated that the decision of the Kumasi metropolitan assembly to decongest the streets of Kejetia and central market is wrongly timed.

The Kumasi metropolitan assembly in a statement early last week said it will be embarking on a massive decongestion exercise on February 1 in a bid to mitigate the spread of covid-19 and beautify the streets of Kumasi.

In an interview on Shaft FM morning show monitored by Soireenews.com the President of the aforementioned group, Ebenezer Nyamekye explained that it's wrongly timed owing to the fact that covid-19 has ravaged businesses and the only means these traders can make money is to trade on the pavement of Kejetia and central market.

He further argued that the satellite markets in the region sit uncompleted with others, not business ready and to him, the best thing to do is to channel the funds to be used for the decongestion to work on these satellite markets.

"There are many satellite markets in Kumasi, talk of Tafo market, Krofrom Market and even racecourse market but the assembly hasn't been able to make it business-ready," he said.

"These traders were sacked from the central market for work to begin on phase two of the Kejetia market project which is gladly understandable, the traders now have to find their daily bread on the pavements but my worry is, the funds being used to do the decongestion could be used to make the satellite markets business ready for the traders to be moved there," he said.

He however was of the view that the leadership of KMA does not respect the people of Ashanti who voted massively for them in the December polls.

"I want to ask KMA if they did not see the traders on the pavements during the election time, these women are the ones that voted massively for NPP to win and now you want to sack them, looking at the upsurge in covid-19 cases count, there’s a possibility of a lockdown now you don't want them to trade, should there be a lockdown, how do you expect them to survive." he quizzed.
